August 2, 2012
Dear Subscribers
Another exciting season of lectures and panel discussions is set to commence and the Advisory Committee has elected to name the 2012-2013 season: “Skirting the Mould, Speakers from the Margins”. These lectures will explore difference, diversity and the other within a Canadian context. The world has become tragically polarized between the Liberal West and the Rest and we designed a program to examine those liberal-democratic values our nation so proudly defends. We expect provocations and spirited exchanges lie ahead so please reserve your tickets now and avoid the chaos of the late subscriber frenzy. Contact Mavis Landers in Subscriptions between 9am and 1pm Monday through Friday.
Please note that prices have increased by a few dollars this season and some tickets will be made available at the door on a sliding-scale basis.
The eight discussions will take place at the Boughman Community Centre Gymnasium on the third Sunday of each month. Mrs. Hedley would appreciate some volunteers to assist with the setup and breakdown of the chairs and tables used during the event. Those interested should call Carol at the front desk during regular office hours. Biscuits, tea and coffee will be provided. Doors open at 1:30pm and we will begin promptly at 2:00pm.
The Advisory Committee acknowledges the success of 2009’s “Model Steam Trains: Engineered to Satisfy” (sold out by mid-August) and 2011’s standing room only series: “African Violets: Orchids are Unworthy”. The 2012 -2013 season is a dramatic departure from the recent past but the Advisory Committee believes these talks will trump those esteemed programs. As always everyone is welcome but we advise parents to be sensitive to the young as these are mature topics.
Though the lectures have been confirmed we are currently negotiating details with our prospective participants. The final version of 2012-2013 Program will be made available during the last week of this month. The Advisory Committee reserves the right to make changes to the program without giving notice. At present (without our speakers listed) the calendar looks like this:
September 2012: Sex At Middle Age: Post Breeding-Condition Passions
October 2012: Muting Anglophones in Western Canada: Francophones Speak Out
November 2012: The Gay Church: Loving Jesus Anew
January 2013: Trading Places: Mr. Harper’s Cabinet move to a Reservation, Aboriginal Elders to Sussex Drive
February 2013: Radical Lesbian Feminism and the Wymyn’s Collective: A World Without Men
March2013: TBD-Sorry folks, we’re working it.
April 2013: Recreational Marijuana: A Threat to our Nation’s IQ and Did Justin Trudeau Inhale? (A special evening with two speakers and a panel discussion.)
May 2013: Considered Ambiguities: The Transgendered Migrate to the Suburbs
We would like to thank our subscribers and participants; none of this would have been a reality without your generous support.
Sincerely
Boughman Community Centre Advisory Committee
